Fan-foot.
(Zanclognatha tarsipennalis)
A Fan-foot moth on an
upturned egg box inside the moth trap.
Information:
At first I thought this was the Common Fan-foot but,
surprisingly, this is Nationally Scarce and a species much in
decline. When I looked at the Fan-foot (without the 'Common') I
saw that it was a perfect match.
Fore-wing length: 13-16mm. There are three darker brown
crosslines on the buff coloured fore-wings. They all three
different and between them diagnostic of the moth. The crossline
nearest the head is curved, the middle one looks like a pair of
Spanish question marks (ie like an English question mark and
then a mirror image of it on the other wing) and the third is an
almost straight crossline.
They fly June-August in or near thick broadleaved woodland &
hedgerows as well as gardens with a lot of trees or bushes. They
are common throughout Britain.
