Drinker
1.
(Euthrix potatoria)
So named because,
apparently, as caterpillars they like to have a drink of dew in
the mornings.
Information:
This male, with a fore-wing length of 21-25mm, is smaller than a
female (28-35mm). They are unmistakable, with a profile
something like a rooting wild boar ! The diagonal cross-line
from the centre of the trailing edge to the wing tip and a white
or yellow spot in the vicinity of the middle of the leading edge
is diagnostic. The colours range from warm reddish browns in the
males to, sometimes, quieter colours such as yellows, greys and
buffs in the females.
They are common throughout England and can be seen flying
July-August, sometimes in gardens but more usually over damper
longer grassy areas of bogs, heaths, moors, fens and the like -
sometimes in damp but open woodland.
