Red-necked
Footman.
(Atolmis rubricollis)
In one of the darker
corners of the moth trap I noticed a flash of brightest orange.
A long search later yielded the name: a Red-necked
Footman!
Information:
A uniform all-over velvety black with a startlingly bright red
collar, but the collar colour fades over time - as with the one
that visited me. They are quite distinctive with their long,
thin 'footman' shape. They can be seen flying June-July in the
canopy of oak or conifer woods and plantations or at rest on
bushes in the same areas. Their Fore-wing length is 15-18mm and
they are resident in most parts of Britain with pockets of
higher density in South Wales and South Western England.
