Lobster moth.
(Stauropus fagi)
I almost missed it in the moth trap - it was so spreadeagled, flat up against the wood, that it looked like a blemish ... Well, some blemish !
Information:
With a Fore-wing length of 24-33mm this moth is one of the larger ones. Very distinctive in shape as the hind wings protrude at rest on either side of the fore-wings. It is said to resemble a clump of dried leaves in this pose and, although I can see what they mean, I think it looks like a beautiful cape.
A distinctive mixture of muted colours - a range of greys, pale yellows and buffs; hairy edgings on the leading edges of the hind wings, furry legs, a row of black and white dots and a yellow sine wave of little arches across the Fore-wings. All very distinctive and a beauty as well. They are common, resident and well distributed in Britain and can be seen flying May-July - well worth looking out for.
