Early Thorn.
(Selenia dentaria)

This moth, an Early Thorn, was waiting in the moth trap for me to photograph it one very early pre-breakfast morning.

Information:
This is one of the moths that looks superficially like a butterfly when it stands at rest with wings in vertical mode. It can be seen flying, often at dusk, in February-May and then, later on, betwen July and September as the second generation takes flight. The ragged-looking trailing edge of the wing and the equally ragged-looking curved bars are diagnostic - It looks almost as if it has been painted in 'dazzle camouflage' of cream, fawn and brown. Forewing length: 14-23mm.
