On the front of the Memorial there is a Tablet which simply states what happened 100 years ago at this spot.

That old Union Colliery was later renamed - Monument Colliery - and is today the other one of the only two still-working freemines in the Forest (and, therefore, in the whole World.) The working part of the Hopewell Colliery (The Phoenix) being the other one of the unique pair.
