Forest History

A Provincial Roman Villa.

For those slaves who were not used in the house, life could be very hard. Dependent on the resources locally available, there would often be an industrial section in an estate.

In the industrial section slaves would work making goods to be used within the environs of the villa or for sale or even for export elsewhere. In the Forest, this might well have been extracting lead from lead workings, such as Puzzle Wood, or iron from the nearby seams and scowles. The lead would be melted down into saleable ingots and the iron fashioned into tools or ornaments.

The row of small vats or round pits in this picture are part of the industrial section of the El Munts villa.
